In a report, Mark Pincus, Founder of Zynga, believes that many game developers are too tied to their egos and are reluctant to copy ideas from other games that have proven successful.
In his latest book entitled “Life at the Speed of Play”, Pincus introduces a product development philosophy which he calls “Proven Better New”. The philosophy explains the methods that he believes have been an important foundation in Zynga’s journey.
According to him, this philosophy is divided into 3 main stages. The first stage is to take elements that have been proven to be liked by players (Proven), then improve its quality (Better), and finally adding new innovations (New). He considers the innovation stage to be the riskiest part so it needs to be tested separately.
Pincus believes that many young development teams are too focused on appearing original. In fact, this can actually hinder the creation of better products. He emphasized that copying what has been successful legally is not a problem, as long as developers are able to provide meaningful improvements and innovations.
Proving Philosophy in Several of His Games
For example, Pincus highlights the journey of several popular games in the industry. He cited Zynga Poker as an early implementation of the concept. The game takes familiar online poker mechanics, then improves them by eliminating the need to download an app and adding players’ real identities via Facebook profiles.
Pincus also touched on the connection between FarmVille and Hay Day. According to him, Hay Day is basically a mobile version of FarmVille, and even has a number of very similar visual elements. However, he doesn’t see that as a problem. Instead, Pincus considers it a successful example of the concept’s application.
He also admitted that Zynga had taken inspiration from other games when developing its various titles. For Pincus, the gaming industry has long developed through a process of mutual adoption, refinement and development of existing ideas. The most important thing is not to be the first, but to be able to provide a better experience for players.
