This feature involves 2 factors in order to work, namely the presence of devices as senders and receivers that can connect to each other on the same network.
Some mobile devices have protocols that are highly dependent on being able to run them, such as Miracast, Apple’s AirPlay, and the use of technology based on the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA).
The Beginning of the History of Screen Mirroring Until Now

You might think that the Screen Mirroring feature was first created at the beginning of the era when smartphone gadgets were created or started to become popular in the world. It turns out you were wrong.
The initial history of this feature being created was a long process which did not only involve one company. Initially Screen Mirroring was created as part of the evolution of protocol-based developments wireless. Even when this feature was initially proposed, Screen Mirroring had a different function from what we know today.
2003-2010

It all started in 2003 when an alliance of technology companies called the Digital Living Network Alliance initiated many companies to launch a new technology system. The alliance involves many large companies, such as Sony, Microsoft, and also Intel.

In 2009, the implementation of DLNA was further refined in terms of interoperability which includes features ranging from device discoverydevice control, media distribution, media management, and also copyright protection (DRM).

Then in 2010, the Apple company introduced their own technology called AirPlay which is capable of streaming audio and video wireless for consumers of their products. And AirPlay introduced the AirPlay Mirroring function in 2011 which provides features that users can use share screen on their iPhone and iPad devices directly wireless to a larger screen, such as a TV.
This discovery is said to be the beginning of a marker where consumers can enjoy the technological features of Screen Mirroring as we know it today.
In the same year, DLNA became one of the main pillars that has an important role in the protocol guidelines called Protected Streaming Guidelines which were later adopted as an international standard by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
It is known that this standard uses DTCP-IP (Digital Transmission Content Protection over Internet Protocol) technology to protect public content shared over local networks from piracy or unauthorized distribution.
Meanwhile, DLNA has grown into an organization with more than 200 member companies participating in the development of interoperability standards for digital devices.

In 2012, an alliance called the Wi-Fi Alliance introduced a standard for sharing screens on devices via Wi-Fi technology called Miracast. This technology is not much different from Apple’s AirPlay, the difference is that Miracast can be used on non-Apple devices, namely Android and Windows.
Meanwhile another company called Barco also introduced a product share regularly wireless on the device with one button named as ClickShare.
From 2012 until the next few years, it was an era where companies competed to carry out “Wireless Collaboration” which became is trending in the technology industry market.
2018 and Beyond

In 2018, many technology companies started to further develop their Screen Mirroring features. Like how Apple released AirPlay 2 in iOS 11.4 in 2018 which added various improved features from the previous version.
Meanwhile, other companies such as Google also do not want to be left behind by developing their Screen Mirroring technology. Google utilizes this feature in their technology products that focus on productivity, privacy and collaboration with devices from other companies, such as Google Cast and Smart TV.
The rapid development of Screen Mirroring technology is starting to enter a stage where features can be more easily accessed by users on various devices in 2018 and 2019. This includes:
- Miracast has become a kind of standard for Android-based Smart TVs and Smartphones.
- Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, OPPO, and Vivo are starting to integrate the Screen Mirroring feature directly into their gadget device systems.
- The industry’s focus is starting to shift from simply capturing a device’s screen to another device with a larger screen to a more efficient streaming experience through technology casting.
- And many more.
Then in 2020 and 2021 there was a very high increase in the use of the Screen Mirroring feature for many people from various ages and work professions. This is because the COVID-19 pandemic requires people to work from home and reduce direct interactions in order to avoid the spread of the virus at that time.
In these years, various companies such as Zoom, Google Meet, Discord, and others tried to improve the Screen Mirroring feature service or in this case Share Screen so that users could be comfortable using it.
In addition, Android’s MediaProjection API system is increasingly being used by various third-party applications to share the screen of working devices real time.
After the pandemic is over, many people will still use this service feature for work and for learning activities for school or college students.
