Shift Up CEO Says AI is Important to Compete with Chinese and US Developers

The use of AI in the development of video games is still a polemic that is likely to continue for a long time. Even though its existence is often opposed by consumers, quite a few developers still use AI to help with various game development processes.

Kim Hyung-tae, CEO of Shift Up and director of the game Stellar Blade, recently shared his views on the use of AI at the national event “2026 Economic Growth Strategy” in South Korea.

Quoting from GameMeca (via Automaton), he believes that AI can be an important tool to compete with Chinese and US developers on a global scale, specifically regarding the large number of human resources involved in developing a game.

We dedicate about 150 people to a game, but China can deploy between 1,000 to 2,000 (people). We lack the strength to compete, in terms of both quality and volume of content.

AI is said to not replace humans

The CEO also mentioned that the solution to adopt AI will not make people lose their jobs, because 100% of human resources still need to be deployed to compete with countries like China and America, and the use of AI is expected to make “one person can handle the work of 100 people”.

This sentiment regarding the use of AI is also supported by Hwi-young Chae as Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea. He mentioned that several large video game companies already have their own AI technology, and even have programs that are expected to help small studios grow.
