Ubisoft wants to change the ‘Far Cry formula’ for Far Cry 7 and Maverick

Far Cry Formula – Ubisoft has various series that are very iconic in the video game industry. One of the franchises that is eagerly awaited by the newest series is Far Cry. And of course there have been rumors circulating about several projects from the series being developed.

And now, it is known that Ubisoft seems to want to change the ‘Far Cry Formula’ for several projects in the series and move away from the format they have been using. What is it?

Ubisoft wants to change the ‘Far Cry formula’?

Ditch the Far Cry Formula

It is currently known that Ubisoft is developing 2 games from this series which originally came from one game with the code name Talisker. These projects are Blackbird which is rumored to be Far Cry 7 and also Maverick which is an Extraction Shooter.

Reporting from Insider Gaming, both games are still in development at this time and the release date may be postponed from 2025 to 2026 due to several complexities in the development of the project.

It is also known that both games were developed at Ubisoft Montreal and that the studio will be abandoning World Engine and moving to Snowdrop. This change was also accompanied by a change in concept.

Ubisoft seems to be moving away from the ‘Far Cry Formula’. Basically, this franchise has the same formula, namely players will use characters who are in a foreign environment and surrounded by enemies where they have to use various weapons and equipment to overcome the problems they face.

Marverick will be located in the Alaskan forest where players will fight with each other, against wild animals, and also cruel weather to survive until they can escape from the zone.

And on the other hand, Blackbird will tell the player who plays a character who must save his family who has been kidnapped by a conspiracy sect that has carried out hallucinogenic experiments on animals and children.

It is known that the player only has 24 hours in the real world or around 72 hours in the game to save his family, and the timer can be seen in the game by the player via the watch on his arm.

Not only changing the gameplay loop

It turns out that not only the gameplay loop and theme have changed. It is also known that both games received significant overhauls to the character movement system as well.

Some of the additions include Tactical sprinting, Sliding, Vaulting, and many more. This seems to be because both projects come from the same game and share the same mechanics so they can be said to be unified.

Internally, Ubisoft Montreal and backing studio Blackbird are cautiously optimistic, but some are concerned about Maverick and its bleak future given the events of the publisher.

Ubisoft has been trying to make Far Cry Multiplayer for the past decade. And Extraction Shooter makes sense if it’s chasing trends. But unfortunately this genre does not attract as many players as the gaming industry had hoped.

For now, it looks like Ubisoft is trying to break with the trend-chasing strategy and perhaps Far Cry 7 or subsequent games and Maverick will be the right move going forward.
