The following is a statement from Roskomnadzor.

Discord access is currently being restricted due to violations of legal requirements in Russia, which must be complied with to prevent the use of the application for terrorist and extremist acts, recruitment of citizens to commit such acts, sale of drugs, and related to the dissemination of unlawful information.

Roskomnadzor (RKN)

Discord is included in the social media platforms that are officially registered in the country. In other words, the platform is obliged to follow existing rules, including finding and blocking illegal content independently.

Since last month, Roskomnadzor has ordered the company to remove nearly 1,000 items deemed illegal and previously imposed a fine of 3.5 Million Rubles ($36,150) for not removing prohibited content and failing to monitor the platform.

Google and TikTok were also hit with fines

In recent years, Russia has ordered foreign technology platforms to remove content deemed illegal, imposing relatively small but regular fines when companies are deemed to have failed or not complied with the regulations.

Previously, the red bear country had imposed fines on 2 giant companies, namely Google and TikTok, amounting to 5 million rubles ($58,038) and 4 million rubles ($47,080), respectively.

The fines were imposed because the two companies were found to have failed to remove and monitor the circulation of content deemed illegal on their platforms.
