Epic Games integrated Mapbox into its Unreal Engine as part of their HMI initiative to enable next-generation infotainment and digital cockpit user experiences — here’s a sneak peek.
The move to offer Unreal in a dedicated HMI package brings the award-winning Unreal Engine design features to automotive, starting with GMC’s Hummer EV. These features allow developers to iterate on their vision faster and include version control, visual scripting via Blueprints, and direct access to the C++ code base. With Mapbox, Unreal combines map rendering and navigation capabilities into a fully customizable real-time 3D rendering tool.
User interface elements are created and rendered with Unreal Engine, enabling the full spectrum of gaming engine capabilities on automotive infotainment screens. The map was created with Mapbox Studio and then placed into Unreal. Epic will roll out more HMI-specific features in Unreal Engine in the coming months and throughout 2021.
“Mapbox’s powerful design tools, style switching support, and sleek performance make it a great solution for mapping. With its suite of other features for automotive, this is an attractive navigation solution.” — Joe Andresen, HMI Technical Product Manager, Epic Games.
